This Picture Sums It Up.....

I´m a little bit busy during the last few days and this will probably last until the end of the week.... I´m trying to trade a bit and maybe pick up some bargains .... So don´t expect too much posting activity until next week.... In the meantime it is fun to revisit this famous DAX 8000 cover from one of Germans leading newspapers from 15 month ago..... :-) . Make also sure you visit this gallery of desperate stock traders & investors around the globe.....

Chart Of The Day " Depression Index"

I´m not sure if this qualifies for a contrary indicator but the pessimism, fear & volatility are all reaching new historic highs ( see latest cover from Time & Economist & someone told me that even Cramer is telling people to get out of stocks......) signalling maybe a short term bottom or bounce..... Emphasis is on short term.... Either way you look at this it is definitely not a bad time to be a labaled as a notorious Goldbuck..... :-)

"33 Great Ways To Save Money" .... UK Yellow Press On CPI / Credit Crunch

No Kidding! The piece from the SUN ( yellow press ) in the UK is no satire ! Things must be really ugly ....... I´m not sure if this is qualifying for a contrary indicator / cover story indicator ( like this one ) regarding the inflation debate but when you read the follwoing advice in relation with mayonnaise i assume we are nearer the CPI top than most peolple think.... On the other hand i´m very very confident that the same is not true for the credit crunch in the UK !

Kein Witz!

21. Mayonnaise is a fine hair conditioner, adding shine.

Give hairdressers the brush off if you want blonde highlights — just brush lemon juice into your barnet and let it dry in the sun.

I think it´s difficult for the BOE & other central banks to claim that are still in control over "inflation expectations" ( see Real Cost of Living Index (RCLI) is rising at 9.5 per cent. via Barry Ritholtz ) ........Disclosure : I´m with Mish´s definition on Inflation ( see Inflation: What the heck is it? )

What the heck is it? )

The SUN THE credit crunch is biting but you can ease the squeeze if you take a few simple steps.

Here Sun cheapskate TIM SPANTON shares his expertise, with 33 great ways to save money now that prices are rising at 3.3 per cent, the highest rate for more than ten years.

But be warned – there are some tips here even miserly Ebenezer Scrooge might be ashamed of taking up.

Remember, if you’re feeling the pinch, laughter is the best medicine – and it’s FREE.

1. Use banana skins to clean your shoes. The inside of the skins contains potassium, a key ingredient in commercial polishes.

Finish off with a soft cloth. Oils in the banana will even enrich the leather in your shoes and help them last longer.

2. Collect old slivers of soap and squeeze them together to make a new bar.

3. Never buy the first round in a pub. If you go drinking once a week and always get to the bar first you will end up buying dozens more rounds more a year than a person who always buys the fourth round.

This is because drinking sessions often end after an odd number of rounds. .....

8. Buy postage stamps in bulk, before the prices go up, which we all know they will. .....

14. Mix milk with equal amounts of water to go on your breakfast cereal. You will soon get used to it. The slight difference in taste is very small and soon won’t be detected at all.

15. Watch telly in bed in the dark. You’ll save on heating and lighting costs and if there’s a sexy show on, you might even get a bonus cuddle from your partner.

18. Get off a stop early if you commute by bus or Tube to save cash. ....

24. Buy Christmas presents in the sales after the holidays and keep for a year.

27. Shower instead of bathing. To save even more, shower with a friend.

>If you don´t believe me that this is not an ironic piece from the SUNn click the link and read the entire link... There are lots of suggestions that do make sense and are less "exotic".

Revisiting The Cover Story Indicator

Time to revisit the Cover Story Indicator from June 2007 when one of the leading German magazine had its cover story how to get rich with stocks.

Looking at the DAX chart it seems the indicator has once again worked. Nice timing

With stories like Stock Drop Pulls 38 Indexes Into Bear Market; Banks Lead Plunge i think the next related stock cover will look less rosy... I´ll keep you updated and maybe at the time they will once again work as a good indicator.... But i have the feeling that this point isn´t just around the corner....

The Panic About The Dollar / Economist

This cover is just too beautiful to let it pass. Only this cover is fitting the greenback issue better. It also feels like Der Spiegel has had a similar idea for their cover. The story Losing faith in the greenback is also worth the read. Brad Setser has as usual some very insightful views on the currency front.

I especially agree with the first quote.....

THE long-run value of all paper currencies is zero. That is a fond saying of Bill Bonner, goldbug and publisher of the Daily Reckoning, a contrarian financial newsletter. So why should the dollar be any different?

Cover Stoy Indicatior....

The $ crash and the strong € (€/$ today 1,4875) is making more and more headlines in Germany and the rest of Europe. Dozends of companies are now warning on a daily basis that the strong € is hurting their business. "Der Spiegel" is the most influential, respected and important news magazine in Germany. So i think it qualifies for the "Cover Story Indicator" and the worst at least for the short term for the $ might be over. Largely thanks to the way overvalued € and the weakening European economy..... Another hint that the € is way overvalued can be seen when you look at the exchange rate vs the oil rich Norwegian Crown.....

One company is follow closely is K+S. They are one the leading fertilizer companies in the world and they have have warned 2 times within a week that the higher $ did hurt earnings significantly and much stronger than anticipated. Even with a complex hedging strategy they were not able to compensate for the slump ( maybe too complex even for the management...). Compare the charts from the US competitor Potash with K+S over the past 6 month. If you now add the 10 percent exchange rate difference during the 6 month to the Potash outperformance the chart would look even more impressive.......

I could name several other examples for this kind of currency impact also for other currencies like the Yen etc...

Recession Talk Is Making Headlines

Finally the "recession" talk is making headlines. The only think that wonders me is that there is still a discussion that the US will face a recession.... If the US would use a more "realistic" formula ( see this example ) i assume that the recession is already here.... The clearest sign might be that Starbucks reportet the first decline ever in customer visits. :-) . Here is more Coffee Talk via Cutting The Bull

IN 1929, days after the stockmarket crash, the Harvard Economic Society reassured its subscribers: “A severe depression is outside the range of probability”. In a survey in March 2001, 95% of American economists said there would not be a recession, even though one had already started. Today, most economists do not forecast a recession in America, but the profession's pitiful forecasting record offers little comfort
