True story...
Someone I know recently went to their local branch of the US Post Office to mail a package to another person. The package contained some books and videos, which was wrapped in birthday wrapping paper then placed in a box and taped up.
The person told them it was media mail (this is a less expensive way to mail items to another but its reserved for books, CDs DVDs and magazines.) So the item was stamped 'media mail' and the post office person took the money to ship the item, then placed the payment sticker on the box and took it for delivery.
OK.. good so far.
A couple days later, the recipient of the package gets the present. But its not received in the condition it was sent. The box had been opened at the post office then re-taped. How would one know this for certain? Because half the birthday wrapping paper had been torn off so that someone could inspect the package to be sure it was really books and DVD's.
In other words, the United States Post Office opened a private citizen's package and ripped open wrapping paper to inspect contents to ensure that it was really books and not something else which would cost them to lose $3 in extra shipping fees!!
Just Disgusting!
I personally have not used the Post Office for years. Here's how you can avoid giving them your money as well:
1) Pay all bills online via your bank's online pay- If you pay 10 bills a month including utilities, credit cards, etc, the yearly savings by doing it online adds up to nearly $50
2) Send people e-cards for holidays and special occasions- this also has the dual effect of avoiding giving Hallmark between $3.50-$6.95 per card just to tell someone who knows you love them, that you do.
3) When buying gifts for another, do it online where shipping is either free, or use UPS or FedEx as delivery method
** Personally I use Amazon for pretty much Everything I buy as gifts and for a yearly cost of $79, I belong to Amazon Prime which allows me free 2 day shipping as often and to as many people as I wish, including orders coming directly to me.
I haven't used the US Post Office in years & with no regrets.
